Captain America #1 (March 1941) |
In celebration of the United States 235 birthday, with the help of bad 1960's television animation, let's take a look at the origin of one of the nations greatest defenders, Captain America.
Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1941, Captain America burst on the scene making his view of American foreign policy crystal clear by punching Hitler in the face on the cover of his first issue.
One of the most successful golden age characters, Cap has managed to have a comic title at one point or another in every decade since his first appearance.
What it is that I have always loved about the character is that despite the ups and downs of American politics, Captain America has always represented the best of America, the ideal of what it is the US can be.
So happy birthday America, enjoy.
